About Us
Melville Animal Hospital has been part of the Melville community for many years and was one of the first animal hospitals south of the river. The practice was much smaller when it was first established and only had a waiting and reception area, a single consulting room, a surgical theatre and a kennel area.
The hospital underwent redevelopment in 1994 to provide you with more consulting rooms and a large treatment area.
In 2025 we are looking forward to our new renovation!

Frequently Asked Questions
We understand that your time is valuable, and we strive to keep waiting times to a minimum. While unavoidable circumstances may occasionally arise, we appreciate your patience and understanding. In most cases, we are able to stay on schedule and ensure your appointment runs smoothly.
To make booking even more convenient, we now offer online bookings. This allows you to schedule an appointment at a time that suits you best, while still ensuring we can provide the right amount of time to address your pet’s needs. By managing appointments efficiently, we aim to provide the best care for your furry family members while helping you plan your day with ease. Your pet’s health and your time are our top priorities.
While we cannot provide specific advice on pet insurance policies, we can share that pet insurance is becoming increasingly popular among pet owners. In cases of unforeseen circumstances, it has proven to be incredibly helpful for many of our clients who have chosen to insure their pets.
Unlike human healthcare, there is no Medicare or public system for pets, meaning all veterinary care is privately funded. This makes pet insurance particularly valuable in emergencies or when life-saving treatments are needed. Many policies offer coverage for these situations, providing peace of mind during stressful times.
There are now numerous pet insurance providers available, so we encourage you to take the time to research, compare options, and ask questions to find the policy that best suits your needs and your pet’s requirements.
No, we don’t charge for longer consultations. Our current consultations are 15-20 minute appointments, however, if your pet has a complicated case we may need to extend this time for you.
We often receive questions about pricing, particularly for procedures like sterilisations or more complex surgeries. It’s important to understand that pricing isn’t determined arbitrarily or simply based on the complexity of a procedure. At Melville Animal Hospital, we have full hospital facilities equipped with advanced monitoring and diagnostic tools, along with a high staff-to-patient ratio to ensure the utmost safety and care for your pet. These resources, while essential for maintaining exceptional standards, come at a significant cost to the practice.
Unlike some industries, veterinary care receives no government assistance and is entirely privately or commercially funded. We work hard to keep our costs as low as possible while maintaining the level of care your pet deserves. Each procedure is carefully costed based on factors such as time, surgical equipment, consumables, medications, and theatre fees, ensuring fair pricing that reflects the value and resources involved.
Sterilisations, in particular, are heavily discounted, even though they are major surgical procedures. This is a standard practice across veterinary clinics, offered as a community service to promote the health and wellbeing of pets. We’re committed to providing you with exceptional care options that balance quality and affordability, because your pet’s health and safety are always our top priority.
We understand the importance of continuity in your pet’s care, and we’re happy to accommodate if you have a preferred vet. Our vets work multiple days with regular consulting hours, so if you’d like to see the same vet each visit, just let us know, and we’ll do our best to find a suitable appointment time. If your pet requires more urgent care, rest assured that all our vets are here to help, and detailed patient records ensure seamless communication with your regular vet to provide the best possible care.
Yes, please call us on 08 9317 4177, or send an email to nurses@melvet.com.au - you can order repeat medication on this page
At Melville Animal Hospital, we adhere to strict legislation governing the prescription and dispensing of medications for your pets. To ensure their safety and the effectiveness of their treatment, we require each pet to be examined regularly.
For many cases, medication repeats can be extended for up to six months. However, certain conditions may require more frequent assessments before additional medications can be provided. Your veterinarian will discuss the specific requirements of your pet’s treatment plan during your consultation.
Please note that restricted medications cannot be dispensed on repeat. These medications require additional oversight and will need to be re-prescribed after a veterinary assessment.
Melville Animal Hospital is not a pharmacy and cannot fill prescriptions over the counter. All medications are dispensed directly by our veterinarians, carefully checked, and signed off to ensure accuracy and compliance with regulations. Once your pet’s prescription is ready, our team will contact you to arrange collection.
No, but we can provide Rabies vaccinations.
